A Woman Brews A Bold Impact With Coffee
Bugkalot Coffee Company ('BCC') exists to create a sustainable economy in the Bugkalot ancestral domain and nearby areas via production and distribution of coffee and other agricultural products. BCC has established and operates a coffee plantation in the Bugkalot ancestral domain with an integrated, end-to-end agricultural supply chain (including organic fertilizer production for the plantation, coffee nursery, plantation and processing center, as well as third party roasting). They are expanding their operations to include coffee trading and processing from nearby coffee growing communities, Adlai & other high-value crop production, and small-scale vegetable trading. These are a means to create an economy and job opportunities for the community.
Even though they are deep within the mountain region of the Philippines, they have been able to see some fruits of their labor over the last 8 years of existence. One example is a woman worker who has brewed a bold impact for her family. Meet Ofelia.
She has been part of the cooperative (and the coffee project) almost from the very beginning. Thru this work, she has been able to earn a living wage for the last 8 years. With that, she has been able to marry off children and now has the 2nd generation of her family involved and participating in the coffee project and the cooperative. She has also grown as part of the field teams (working the coffee) and has become a leader in the cooperative.
This is just one example of creating social impact by providing a sustainable economy. Bugkalot currently employs 38 individuals while 200 from the community are involved in the cooperative.
