The Challenge

Indonesia, a sprawling archipelago consisting of 17,000 islands, is home to the fourth largest population in the world. This vibrant nation has experienced remarkable economic growth and transformation over the past two decades, but it also faces significant challenges. Among these, the foremost health concern is the relentless rise of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), often referred to as chronic diseases. These escalating NCDs pose a critical issue for Indonesia, impacting lives, healthcare systems, and societal resilience in several ways:

  • Human Lives at Stake: NCDs account for a staggering 7 out of 10 premature deaths in Indonesia, encompassing the top four culprits, namely stroke, ischemic heart disease, diabetes, and cirrhosis of the liver (Lancet 2019 data organized by healthdata.org).

  • Strain on Healthcare: The high costs associated with treating NCDs put in question the sustainability of Indonesia's universal healthcare system (lowyinstitute.org 2021).

  • Perpetuating Poverty and Straining Health Systems: High rates of chronic diseases perpetuate poverty, strain the already fragile health infrastructure, and render the nation less resilient when faced with emergencies, including infectious disease outbreaks (CDC, 2021).

Despite increasing awareness, the prevalence of chronic diseases in Indonesia continues to worsen. The country remains resource-constrained in addressing this critical health challenge (Plos One, 2017). A paradigm shift towards health promotion is urgently needed (Lancet, 2018).

A Solution

Healthy Lifestyle Coaching Indonesia aims to address this pressing issue by offering a solution at the core of the problem - daily lifestyles riddled with unhealthy habits. The initiative provides direct health coaching services to the community and offers training and certification programs for individuals aspiring to become health coaches. Their vision is simple - to foster a healthier Indonesia, one client and one health coach at a time.

Beyond its impact on the nation's health, this initiative has the potential to create a positive ripple effect within Indonesia's labor force. The country grapples with high unemployment rates among college graduates, notably among nurses (stratsea, 2021). Furthermore, a significant challenge within Indonesia's labor market is the mismatch between skills and labor market demand. By imparting training and skills, Healthy Lifestyle Coaching Indonesia not only generates employment opportunities in the field of health coaching but also enhances the marketability of nursing graduates for conventional roles within the healthcare system.

Well-trained health coaches are capable of guiding clients from unhealthy lifestyles to healthy ones. They are pioneering this health coaching approach as it does not yet exist in Indonesia.
