The Challenge

Indonesia faces significant public health challenges, including high rates of chronic diseases and inadequate emergency medical response. Chronic diseases such as heart attacks, strokes, malnutrition, undiagnosed high blood pressure, and diabetes-related complications are prevalent, contributing to frequent deaths and disabilities.

Part of the reason and challenge is that the country's healthcare infrastructure is hindered by the inadequacy of community and nationwide health training education, including CPR and FirstAid. As noted by Sciencedirect, "Poor survival rates in the community settings are common because of limited and ineffective bystander basic life support (BLS) ... The community and nationwide CPR training policies have not been developed in Indonesia." The majority of community members are unaware of training that lay people can do to save lives during an emergency.

Additionally, the general health of the population is declining partly due to a decrease in physical activity. A health index released by Sun Life Financial Asia found that "21 percent of Indonesian respondents felt their health had deteriorated in the past three years, citing less exercise as the cause of the decline in their well-being" (thejakartapost.com). This highlights the need for improved health education and better access to exercise facilities. Most community members do not have access to gyms or funds to pay for memberships. And there are virtually no outdoor parks or free recreation areas in the entire city of Jakarta, for example.

Health services include tele-consulting, treatment advice, and medical information. Safety efforts address the lack of emergency services and widespread misconceptions about CPR and first aid, providing tailored training programs to empower community members with life-saving skills. Community engagement involves promoting health through fitness classes, early learning programs, and a children's library. Health Training Center aims to reduce rates of fatal strokes, heart attacks, and injuries, and improve access to health education. Future goals include expanding these programs, increasing local employment, and implementing new initiatives like tuberculosis treatment and home health care.
